Current rank: |
Born & raised: |
| ITF 7th Dan |
Born: Ipoh (Malaysia) Raised & Lived: Auckland (New Zealand), |
I have been practicing ITF Taekwon-Do for over 36 years, beginning in 1989. I grew up in a martial arts family. My five older siblings began training in 1983, and though I was only three years old too young to practice I watched eagerly. By nine, I was finally able to join them, training six to seven days a week and earning my junior black belt by age of 11.
In 1996, my family migrated to New Zealand, where I briefly paused training before finding a new club and reigniting my passion. Moving to Europe in 2003 marked another turning point, allowing me to train alongside world class competitors and develop as both an athlete and leader.
One of my most cherished memories is retiring as:
- European Champion just before turning 40 in 2019, a true fairytale ending to a lifelong pursuit.
- In 2012 European Championship in Slovenia, where I defeated the hometown favorite and reigning world champion from previous years remains a highlight.
Competitive Highlights:
3x ITF World Champion*
3x European Champion
Multiple World & European Team Sparring Titles (2013, 2015, 2017)
*Over a 20 year international career, I competed in 10 World Championships and 10 European Championships.
I currently serve as the Chairperson of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) Athlete Committee, a position I have held for the past year after 5 years of dedicated service on the committee. I have been working closely with my colleagues to expand my knowledge and contribute to the development of ITF Taekwon-Do globally.
For me, ITF Taekwon-Do is not only a sport but also a guiding philosophy that has shaped my life. Its core values, perseverance, integrity, humility, respect have helped me navigate cultural shifts, personal challenges, and professional goals.
At Nio TKD & Fitness, I continue to mentor students, develop athletes, and share the lifelong lessons ITF Taekwon-Do has instilled in me.
What’s next?:
Looking ahead I am committed to fostering the Growth, Integrity and Fairness of ITF Taekwon-Do worldwide.
As a Chairperson of the ITF Athlete Committee, I continue to advocate for athlete rights, clean sport and fair competition.
Locally, I coach at Nio TKD & Fitness, mentor aspiring practitioners, and serve both the ITA Technical Committee and the ITF Asia Development Committee. My goal is to uphold the true spirit of Taekwon-Do and inspire others to pursue excellence on and off the mat.
My experience working with Mightyfist:
My experience with Mightyfist has been inspiring. Their dedication to excellence and community reflects my own values, collaborating with them has enriched my journey as both teacher and leader.
Being named ITF Athlete of the Month is an honor that affirms our shared passion for Taekwon-Do.
The best advice I’ve received by an instructor/coach: |
Knowing what I know now, what would I tell my younger self: |
| "Seek not to be recognized, but to be worthy of recognition ." |
(Quote shared by my partner Sabum Sabina Mason) "Be strong when you are weak, brave when you are scared, and humble when you are victorious" |
