Meet Sabum Michael Rivera

Current rank:

Born & raised:

ITF 6th Dan

Toa Baja, Puerto Rico

I began practicing ITF Taekwon-Do at just 3 years old, inspired by my older brother, who enjoyed watching Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies. From that moment, I dreamed of becoming like them, and martial arts quickly became my lifelong passion.

Among my proudest achievements, two moments stand out as the most memorable in my career as a competitor:

  1. When I won the Gold Medal at the 2014 ITF World Cup in Jamaica.
  2. When I won the Gold Medal at the 2015 ITF World Championships in Italy.

Competition Highlights:

Bronze Medal, ITF Pan American Championships 2008
Gold Medal, ITF Caribbean Championship 2010
Gold Medal, ITF World Cup 2014
Gold Medal, ITF World Championships 2015
ITF Caribbean Champion 2025
20x 4th-6th Degree ITF National Champion.

Today, I continue sharing my passion by teaching ITF Taekwon-Do at my dojang called Active Taekwon-Do Institute, and through extracurricular classes at the American Military Academy, where I also serve as a Physical Education Teacher.

I also had the privilege of assisting Master Gato in teaching a technical seminar in Cuba, which is one of the most gratifying experiences of my teaching journey. It was truly fulfilling to share my knowledge and help promote ITF Taekwon-Do in another part of the Caribbean.

What’s next?:

My next goal is to compete at the ITF World Cup in Spain next year, where I’ll continue pushing my limits and testing myself against some of the best in the world. After that, my focus will shift toward preparing for the next ITF World Championships in Paraguay, where I aim to bring my experience, passion, and hard work to the highest level of competition once again.

My experience working with Mightyfist:

My collaboration with Mightyfist has been an excellent experience. I truly enjoy their doboks and the way they feel both in training and in competition.

Words of wisdom from Sabum Michael Rivera:

The best advice I’ve received by an instructor/coach:

Knowing what I know now, what would I tell my younger self:

"Dream Big, Work Hard to achieve it, and always give your Best"

"Never stop dreaming, never stop working for what you believe in, and always remember that with God, anything is possible."
