Meet Sabum JULIO CARLOS

Current rank:

Born & raised:

4th Dan ITF

Queens, New York

My martial arts journey began at the young age of 5 years old when my parents enrolled me in Taekwon-Do as an after-school program near our home. It took me years to see the potential I had inside me. Once it channeled in, there was no looking back. My devotion for the sport grew stronger year after year.

Things pivoted for me at the ITF World Championships in 2007 in Quebec, Canada. I was 16 years old then. Winning 2nd place in my sparring category is to this day, my most memorable moment in my career. Competing at this age was not easy but it showed me what I was capable of inside and out. It taught me how to unlock further potential I had inside my heart.

My current titles:

6x ITF World Champion
2x ISKA World Champion
WAKO Pan American Champion

Currently, I teach seminars for all ages around the world and am working on growing my business. I'm also enjoying doing some cross training by playing handball on an international level.

What’s next?:

At this time, I am most looking forward to competing at the 2025 ITF World Championships in Croatia. This is extremely meaningful to me as it will be my last time competing in an ITF World Championship.

My experience working with Mightyfist:

My experiences have always been great working with Mightyfist. As the first official sponsored athlete with them, I was able to experience the quality and reliability of the brands equipment as it unfolded. The unmatched feeling of wearing a Mightyfist Dobok has always made me feel ready to compete.

Words of wisdom from Sabum Carlos:

The best advice I’ve received by an instructor/coach:

Knowing what I know now, what would I tell my younger self:

"SLOW IS SMOOTH, AND SMOOTH IS FAST."

Meaning, master the perfection and the speed will come with time.

I would tell my younger self to "Enjoy the process and always remain humble!"
