Meet Sabum HONEY OSPINA

Current rank:

Born & raised:

5th Degree Black Belt Bogotá, Colombia
I started training Taekwon-Do at the age of 6, and never looked back. My family and I had just moved into a new apartment complex so I had no friends. One day I was out walking with my grandmother and we saw a group of kids playing in my complex's gym. When we got closer, I saw they were doing Taekwon-Do with my first Instructor Sabum Gabriel Lopez. From that moment, Taekwon-Do became a part of my life.
One of the most significant moments was when I was preparing for my IV Dan exam and was reviewing my previous written exams. In my I Dan exam, I had written that my goal was to compete internationally and to meet Suska. Years later, not only did I meet him, but I also competed at the world level and managed to represent my country in the most important tournaments. It was a reminder that dreams do come true with discipline and perseverance. Over the years, I have won 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the ITF World Championships, as well as 2 gold medals and 2 silver medals in the ITF World Cup. I have also achieved multiple medals in ITF South American, ITF Pan American, and ITF National Championships.
Currently, I am the director of Team Genesis and a coach at different academies, in addition to giving personalized face-to-face and virtual classes. I am also expanding my path in teaching seminars; I recently gave one in Cali, Colombia, and this month I will travel to Puerto Rico for another. Also, on a personal note, I am about to graduate as a Physical Therapist, which will complement my martial arts career.
What’s next?:
Great opportunities are coming. I want to continue improving for my students and growing both in competition and in teaching. We are already training hard for the upcoming competitions in London, Chile, and of course, the World Championship in Croatia. I will also continue organizing seminars and online personal classes, and contributing to the development of Taekwon-Do in my country.
My experience working with Mightyfist:
I have always felt supported by Mightyfist. Since participating in the Mightyfist Cup as a member of the Mightyfist team, I have been deeply committed to promoting the brand. It is not just an equipment brand; it is a community that truly drives athletes forward. I am so glad to be part of the team and contribute to Mightyfist’s growth.
Words of wisdom from Sabum Honey Ospina:

The best advice I’ve received by an instructor/coach:

Knowing what I know now, what would I tell my younger self:

“Make them start seeing you as a woman; you are no longer the same little girl who started at 6 years old. Trust in yourself and in all that you have grown, I believe in you and I know you can achieve it.” That advice changed my mindset and helped me recognize my own potential. Believe more in what you can do. The higher you dream, the higher you will go. Trust yourself and sow good things in your students, because they will be your reflection in the future.
